EARNEST - EVALUATION

Below is my evaluation for my AS Media Main Task.
Within the evaluation itself I answered the following eight questions, each in different video segments:
  1. 1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
The answer:

  1. 2.How does your media product represent particular social groups?
3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

  2. 4.Who would be the audience for your media product?
5.How did you attract/address your audience?

Due to the embedding of the Prezi not working I will instead be providing a direct link
This Prezi answers both questions 4 and 5.

  1. 6.What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  2. 7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

EARNEST - Different Versions and Drafts

Below are each of the stages of editing of our film after the revamp.

Above is the first draft of the film.

We were then given criticism and asked to re-edit and alter some of it.

In the above copy of 'EARNEST' the font has been changed, some of the clips have also been trimmed and stabilised.

Below is the third draft, the edit before the final piece, which will be posted in another blog.

The credits have been added to, retimed and changed. Further trimming, timing and stabilisation has occurred.

As you will see in the final piece, a lot more changed following that, including an edit of two other characters into it and an increase in saturation.

EARNEST - A New Soundtrack

Due to the revision of our film, we have decided to replace the cover of ''Don't Go Breaking My Heart'' by Stingy Eyes to an instrumental track.

Although I personally thought this would be stressful with so little time remaining in our project, Grace stepped up to the challenge and sought out royalty free music from sources such as BenSound and Kevin Macleod.

It was very easy for us to come to a decision, which surprised me, and we ended up choosing an acoustic-jazz number called ''Energy'' from www.Bensound.com

EARNEST - Revised Script [FINAL}

Below are the two monologues for each of the characters. The actors have been instructed to, whilst recording, to take short pauses in between each sentence so to allow for a fluiditiy of editing, so that I, as the editor may splice each of the audio clips and allow them to go in between our footage.
We hope to do this to create the effect that the two characters are talking about the same topic coincidentally at the same time, but with different outlooks for it. We hope this will add to any comedy and will communicate the friendship between the two characters for their thoughts to be in sync as they are.

Jay: ''Hiya, My name's Oscar.'' - Yeah, that sounds good.   And no one will have thought of it before, definitely not. Who would actually go catfishing. I mean, I'm being careful, and it's not my fault anyway, I know it's not my dad's either but I shouldn't have to suffer for it. ''Jay don't do that- Jay don't post that.'' Can't tell Ali, he'll be melted if he knows I'm going for his cousin. And I bet Alistair will be late as well. As usual.

Ali: I think I've finally found a way around it, definitely. Catfishing! There's no way that there's anything wrong with this, I mean all I'm doing is trying to talk to a girl. She is really lovely like,... Heh (idk a chuckle or sm) she is WILD - and it's my mum's fault anyway. If I get caught I can just blame it on her, she's the one thats not letting me go out. God I can't wait to tell Jay, wonder if he'll mind me mailing his cousin. Be sweet.

EARNEST - Revamping the FIlm

Unfortunately, due to a lack of good sound and audio quality from filming outside most of our footage has been rendered unusable by our supervising Media teacher. This is a great shame, due to the permeated effort we went to trying to arrange alternate filming dates to gather the appropriate outside shots.
We have therefore decided to revamp the film in order to appropriately meet our deadline whilst still upholding a high quality.

We have therefore decided to use the footage we had planned to show at the beginning of the film and perform it with monologues so to lengthen the film's length and communicate the story of the original opening through dialogue. This will completely remove the background noise, as we can silence each of the clips to place a non-diegetic voice-over on top of the clips, and then place background music to create our mood.
Although I know it will be a tight squeeze, we have been working on our revamp of the film since Saturday 5th of May, and I believe that we will be able to produce a short with great quality along with this new idea.

EARNEST- Lengthening Our Soundtrack

Throughout editing we realised that, with the length of our shots that the introduction music we had previously commissioned from independent artist Stingy Eyes would have been too short. This is due to a lot of the scenery and establishing shots we took, which were actually longer and took up a lot more of the film than we had originally anticipated from our storyboard.
Therefore, rather than cutting pieces out of our film, which would have disrupted the narrative and made it unattractive we have instead decided to commission Stingy Eyes once again to lengthen the soundtrack that he supplied us.
Therefore, instead of having a 45 second introduction as we had originally planned, we now have an introduction of 1 minute and 30 seconds, and all is well.

EARNEST - The Editing Process

Throughout this week we have been of, myself as the editor have been making leaps and bounds in terms of our film - A lot of the shots were nicely taken so I do not have to do much in terms of choosing different shots, although I was allowed to channel some creativity of my own into it, as I was able to choose the landscape shots myself. Below are some screenshots of the editing process. Program Used: Sony Vegas Pro 12
